Think of your life as a wheel, constantly spinning around and around in space, taking you from high points to low points to everywhere in between. Now that you're sufficiently dizzy, you're ready for this piece of news: the Wonder Wheel will be free to ride on New Year's Eve and will also be open for discounted rides on New Year's Day.
Deno's Wonder Wheel announced today that you'll be able to rotate around the famous Coney Island landmark on New Year's Eve from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., for absolutely no cost. Then on New Year's Day, you can ride the Wonder Wheel for $5 (usually it costs $8), between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with half of the proceeds going towards the Coney Island Polar Bears’ charity, Camp Sunshine.
This is the second year in a row that the Wonder Wheel is open on New Year's Eve and Day, and is all part of the countdown to when the ride turns 100 in 2020. Instead of counting on your life or America lasting until then, I recommend getting down there this year. You might have New Year's Eve plans already (taking molly, crying, trying to kiss someone pretty), but I can tell you from experience that going out to Coney Island to ride the Wonder Wheel on New Year's Day makes for a really nice time.
Like last year, the New Year's Day forecast is partially sunny and cold, which portends a sparsely populated but not-totally-abandoned Coney Island. When you get up high enough (make sure you dress warm, there's a lot of wind up there), you can watch insane people take the Polar Bear plunge (or you can sign up for it yourself), as well as get a view of the Verrazano with the sun breaking through the clouds. It's all peaceful and about as good a way to start your year off as you're going to get. And if 2017 is even half as much of a psychic death machine as 2016, you might even look back on a Wonder Wheel ride and paying a quarter to watch Miss Coney Island sing "Auld Lang Syne" as the best and most hope-filled part of your entire year.
