It's been weeks since the election of Donald Trump touched off a series of protests in New York City, and despite the fact that it's getting colder, people are still making plans to march and get organized in the face of an administration that seems devoted to stripping both the environment and working people of their resources and dignity and leaving them empty husks. If you want to get involved this month, you've got plenty of options.
Kids Speak Out March
Will this be a real life version of the woke child meme? Possibly, but if you do have a kid you want to introduce to the political process, you could probably do worse than this family-friendly march in Central Park that encourages families and caregivers to bring their kids and talk about their "hopes, fears and vision for us all."
FREE, 12:30 p.m., December 11th, Central Park Children's Gate (East 64th Street and 5th Avenue)
1930s anti-fascism, Black-Jewish solidarity, & the Spanish Revolution
If it's feeling a little Third Reich/international fascism rising to you around here (or the world in general), this is the slideshow for you. Yeah, I know, a slideshow about anti-fascism in the '30s isn't exactly the stirring call to action that taking to the streets and marching is, but you'll be sure to meet like-minded individuals to organize with. Just don't focus too much on the end of the Spanish Civil War, or you'll get all depressed.
FREE, 1 p.m., December 11th, 55 Walker Street
Women and Allies - Nationwide Protest
Women are just one of the many subgroups of humans who'll suffer under a Trump Administration. If you're upset about that, come out next week for a march up to Trump Tower, followed by a few hours of rallying outside the building. The mission of Monday's march is "mobilizing women and allies to leverage our collective power as citizens for immediate action against any effort to erode the rights of women and other vulnerable groups." This all goes on during a weekday afternoon because it's a strike action, so you'll be striking a blow against the patriarchy AND capitalism if you attend.
FREE, starting at noon, December 12th, Columbus Circle
Standing With Standing Rock Benefit
Rock out with your conscience out at Brooklyn Bowl's benefit for the protestors who are still at Standing Rock. While the Army Corps of Engineers have announced that they'll look into other routes for the Dakota Access Pipeline, protestors have remained on site at Standing Rock, aware of the fact that the struggle to keep the pipe from running through Native lands isn't over. The likes of TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone, former Lin-Manuel Miranda bully Immortal Technique, singer-songwriter Holly Miranda and a variety of Native performers including the Standing Rock International Indigenous Youth Council will entertain you and educate you, with all proceeds from ticket sales and merchandise going towards supporting Standing Rock protestors.
$35, 6:30 p.m., December 12th, Brooklyn Bowl, 61 Wythe Avenue
Reds Need Green: Holiday Fundraiser and Party
Feeling socialism-curious as the cabinet gets stocked with more and more cartoonish Monopoly Man plutocrats? Find out what they're all about at a party/fundraiser for the Democratic Socialists of America at Verso Books. Beyond the cheap wine and beer, there'll be a short panel discussion featuring people like Jacobin publisher Bhaskar Sunkara, Chapo Trap House co-host Amber A'Lee Frost and DSA co-chair Rahel Biru who can tell you what the group has been up to and what they're trying to do in the future.
$10, 8p.m., December 16th, Verso Books, 20 Jay Street, Suite 1010
Planned Parenthood Benefit at IDIO Gallery
Not that they haven't been already, but Planned Parenthood is going to be doing a shitload of fighting for reproductive rights over the next few years. Help them shore up their bank account by checking out this concert where all the proceeds will go towards the group, featuring music from Turnip King, Deadbeat Club, The Meltaways and Human People.
$7-$10, 8 p.m., December 17th, IDIO Gallery, 976 Grand St, Studio D
#GetOrganizedBK
Get together with other progressive activists in Brooklyn, along with elected officials and organizations devoted to resisting the Trump agenda. Brad Lander's #GetOrganizedBK has had two meetings so far, with the second one drawing over 700 people to make plans for the coming (hopefully just) four years. This isn't taking it to the streets, it's more of a planning to take it to the streets before you actually do it, so if you love planning and organizing and hate kleptocracy and racism, you'll do well here.
FREE, 7 p.m., December 20th, Congregation Beth Elohim, Corner of Garfield Place and 8th Avenue
Bystander Intervention & De-Escalation Workshop
Want to know how to react, non-violently, if you see an instance of subway harassment? Head to Silent Barn, where organizer and social worker Rachel S Blum Levy will teach you the "four Ds of bystander intervention - direct, distract, delay, and delegate" so you know how to de-escalate racist situations without resorting to violence.
FREE, 7 p.m., December 23rd, Silent Barn, 603 Bushwick Avenue
