The Department of Transportation debuted traffic calming measures on a formerly chaotic intersection at the border of Bushwick and Ridgewood yesterday, including a section of Wyckoff Avenue that has been converted into a pedestrian plaza.

The department held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new pedestrian plaza, which runs from from Myrtle Avenue to Gates Avenue yesterday. The plaza is part of a series of safety improvements proposed for the six-way intersection of Myrtle Avenue, Wyckoff Avenue and Palmetto Street earlier this year. A DOT study of the area showed that between 2010 and 2014 there were 38 serious traffic injuries, including 1 death, at the intersection, which was called a high priority intersection for Vision Zero.

In addition to the pedestrian plaza in front of the Myrtle-Wyckoff L/M stop, the DOT made a series of traffic calming measures to the area. Wyckoff Avenue is now a one way street from Myrtle Avenue to Madison Street, crosswalks around the intersection were widened, pedestrians were given more crossing time from traffic signals and new road marking were painted. The series of changes to the intersection reduced the amount of potential turns cars can make from 25 down to 8, according to Streetsblog.

“These enhancements will do a great deal to improve pedestrian safety along this section of the Queens/Brooklyn border and will help further the City’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative to protect all those who use our roadways,” Queens Borough President Melinda Katz said at the ceremony. “I commend Mayor de Blasio and the New York City Department of Transportation for implementing these important safety enhancements.”
