State Senator Brad Hoylman found two swastikas etched on a service door to his apartment building in Greenwich Village, adding to the number of recent hate crime incidents in the city in the wake of last week's presidential election.
Hoylman, who is Jewish and openly gay, posted about the incident on Facebook and Twitter, writing that he spotted the twin swastikas on door to the Fifth Ave building in which he lives with his partner and daughter yesterday evening. He blamed President-elect Donald Trump's appointment of white nationalist Steve Bannon as chief strategist and senior counselor for the incident, and noted that just last week, swastikas appeared on dorm room doors at the nearby New School. "Meanwhile, Stephen Bannon, an anti-Semitic, white nationalist has been named as the senior strategist to President-elect Donald J. Trump," Hoylman wrote. "Connect the dots."
Mayor de Blasio tweeted at Hoylman that "Millions of New Yorkers stand with you tonight against anti-Semitism," adding, "Hate has no place in NYC. #NotInOurCity." The NYPD's Hate Crime Unit is investigating the incident.
In addition the New School swastikas, a swastika was found on a sidewalk in Crown Heights Sunday morning, and last week, a Muslim prayer room was vandalized at NYU.
A tipster tells us a swastika has appeared in the window of a building on East 96th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues on the Upper East Side, facing the Islamic Cultural Center of New York. "We are at a loss what to do as we are afraid to confront for we do not know if there agenda is propoganda, scare tactic or worse," the tipster, who wishes to remain anonymous, tells us.
The NYPD is investigating the Greenwich Village incident as a hate crime.
