Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the man accused of setting off a pressure cooker bomb in Chelsea and pipe bombs in New Jersey, was officially indicted this afternoon in federal court, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Based on the previous criminal complaint filed against him, Rahimi was indicted today on charges that include one count of using a weapon of mass destruction, one count of bombing a place of public use and two counts of using a destructive device in furtherance of a crime of violence. The first two charges each carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

“Two months ago, Ahmad Khan Rahimi allegedly planted bombs in the heart of Manhattan and in New Jersey. The bomb that exploded in Chelsea shattered windows hundreds of yards away and propelled a 100-pound dumpster over 120 feet, injuring over 30 people," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. "Now indicted by a grand jury, Rahimi will face justice in a federal court for his alleged violent acts of terrorism.”

Rahimi made his first public court appearance last week. There, his attorney told the court that he worried a federal prison couldn't adequately care for Rahimi's injuries resulting from a gunfight with New Jersey police, including "serious liver damage, injuries to his left hand that prevent him from closing it, an open wound on his right leg and serious back and shoulder injuries." He's currently being held in the Manhattan Correctional Center.
