A final piece of the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park is on its way, with the city announcing today that they broke ground on Pier 3, the final pier being turned into parkland. The pier will become a 5-acre lawn once it's finished, with an expected completion date of Spring 2018.
Plans call for the lawn to take up most of the space on the pier, surrounded by a promenade. The north side of the pier will also have a small maze to wander through.
“Breaking ground on Pier 3 marks a landmark achievement: the final major stage of construction to get underway at Brooklyn Bridge Park," Regina Myer, President of Brooklyn Bridge Park, said in a statement announcing the groundbreaking. "A decade ago, our 85 acres were still a barren stretch of industrial wasteland. Today, 330,000 visitors enjoy our waterfront every week and now they’ll have Pier 3 - a beautiful central lawn and a fabulous play space that will transform this five acre concrete platform."
Once construction is done, the pier will join Piers 1, 2, 5, and 6 as former industrial lands turned into parklands, a process that was first dreamed up in the early 1980s and officially started to become a reality when construction started on Pier 1 in 2008.
Something's going to need to be done about the wood-eating marine borers, however.
