Donald Trump didn't give to 9/11 charities in the year or so after the devastating terrorist attacks, contrary to his claim, and he may not have given at all, according to a city audit unearthed by the Daily News. The tabloid reports that Comptroller Scott Stringer reviewed previously sealed audits of two main 9/11 charities set up in the wake of the attacks and found no records of a Trump gift.

Stringer's staff pored over the records in response to a FOIL request. Trump reportedly promised to donate $10,000 to the Twin Towers fund the month of the calamity. The fund was created by then-mayor Rudy Giuliani, now a Trump mouthpiece—and what a mouth it is—who lately has been bragging about Trump's supposed contributions. At the RNC in July, he said that Trump made "anonymous" donations after 9/11, and "every time New York City suffered a tragedy." "He's not going to like my telling you this, but he did it anonymously," Giuliani said.

Stringer told the News that he found no record of any anonymous donations to the charities. The audits ran through July and September, 2002, so there is a possibility that Trump donated after those dates, however, the tabloid's review of records from the Donald J. Trump Foundation show no 9/11 giving through 2014. The paper also couldn't find anybody who recalled Trump donating space in his building at 40 Wall Street to assist in the recovery effort, as he has claimed to have done.

If Trump made the donations personally, he could clear the air by releasing his tax returns, which he has refused to do throughout his campaign, defying decades of convention for presidential nominees.

We have reached out to the Trump campaign for comment and will update if we hear back.

This isn't the first indication that all is not as it seems with the would-be groper-in-chief's charitable giving. In recent months, investigative reports have shown that Trump: used $258,000 from his foundation to settle lawsuits; donated $25,000 to Florida Attorney General Pamela Bondi's reelection campaign as she was considering a fraud probe into his get-rich-quick program Trump University; funneled other people's money through the foundation to take credit for other people's giving; claimed at least four other donations that charities never received; and bought items worth $32,000 at charity auctions with foundation money, possibly in violation of IRS rules.

Trump did donate $100,000 from his foundation to the 9/11 Museum in April of this year. As the News notes, the donation occurred in the wake of Ted Cruz's attacks on him for his supposed "New York values."
