Fany Gerson may have been born and raised in Mexico City but, huge win for us, she's made New York City her home since the aught years, launching two of our finest sweet-treat outfits along the way: Dough, which still makes some of the best doughnuts in town; and La Newyorkina, whose carts and pop-up shacks are kept busy slinging her refreshing paletas, or ice pops, all summer.

Starting tomorrow, however, Gerson's paletas—and her new ice cream!—get a more permanent presence on NYC's dessert landscape with the grand opening of La Newyorkina's Sullivan Street storefront. And to celebrate and give thanks to the good people of the city, she's giving away free ice pops all afternoon, from noon to 6 p.m.

If you've ever had a La Newyorkina paleta, you know what to expect: the flavors are bright and intense, the variety enormously appealing, from Lemon Ginger, Mango Raspberry, and Pineapple Jalapeno to Pink Lemonade, Mixed Berry Colada, and, in the dairy-based department, Horchata, Key Lime Pie, and my favorite, the Red Hook, which is creamy coffee over a core of cookie dough.

New to the storefront is Gerson's ice cream, which is thick, slightly chunky, and for the opening will be scooped in flavors such as Tres Leches (which is delicious), Oaxacon Chocolate, Tropical Margarita, Mole (also delicious), Sour Cream, and Coffee with Salted Cajeta (maybe the most delicious). You can get these in cups or cones, and there are a number of homemade confections available as toppings, including pumpkin seed brittle and chocolate-covered amaranth puffs.

Or try a sweet and spicy Chamoyada, a cup of fruity ice with a puddle on bottom and a drizzle on top of chamoy, or pickled plum juice. A sprinkling of salted chili powder and a sticky tamarind candy round out the impressively varied flavor palate of these beauties.

Gerson plans to offer a more rare, frozen custard-ish concoction here as well, called nieve de garrafa, though this was unavailable during the soft opening period this week. Pre-packaged baked goods such as brownies and galletas are available near the register.

There are a few stools and a counter by the front window at La Newyorkina, but strolling up to Washington Square Park seems like the move on warm days and evenings.

La Newyorkina is located at 240 Sullivan Street between Bleecker and West 3rd Street; lanewyorkina.com
