Police are investigating the death of a six-month-old baby girl whose body was found in an elevator shaft at a residential building in Coney Island.
According to an NYPD spokesperson, six-month-old Areej Ali was found unconscious and unresponsive in an elevator shaft at 3415 Neptune Avenue. A woman believed to be Ali's mother was waiting with a stroller for the elevator on the building's 23rd floor. When the doors opened, the woman walked forward with the stroller before realizing the elevator was not there, but Ali had already fallen into the elevator shaft.
"Nobody trusts those elevators," Harold Noel, a neighbor of the Alis, told the Daily News. "Everybody is scared to take that elevator. There's always problems. My own mom almost died in that elevator years ago."
The building, which is managed by Grenadier Realty, has 64 open violations and 5 open complaints with the Department of Buildings, including some regarding its elevators. On September 30th, a tenant complained that the elevators in the building were not working.
The infant was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Gothamist has reached out to Grenadier Realty for comment and will update when we hear back.
