Over 1,700 NYCHA-run apartments in 46 buildings scattered throughout the city are currently without gas—and in some buildings, tenants have gone without gas for upwards of six weeks.

Tenants at the Grant Houses in Harlem told the Daily News they haven't been able to use their stoves since NYCHA maintenance crews shut gas lines without any warning on August 29th. Tenants have been provided with hot plates and meal vouchers, but many have still had to go out and purchase food in order to feed their families.

"It takes half an hour to boil water on these hot plates," Orsby Wroten, a Grant Houses resident, told Pix11.

According to NYCHA, the Grant Houses' gas was shut off due to a gas leak and the agency is replacing leaking pipes one line at a time. In a statement, NYCHA said "Con Edison and a contractor are expected to finish repairs by early November. NYCHA apologizes for inconvenience to affected residents."

At the Marcy Houses in Bed-Stuy, service has been shut off in six apartments. At the Gaylord White Houses in East Harlem, tenants have had to do without gas since September 25th and told the News that NYCHA hasn't given any concrete information about when service will be restored.

"Housing is neglecting too many problems in here," Frank Gonzalez, an 89-year-old Gaylord Houses resident told the News. "We pay rent for the service, not for the walls. We don't live on welfare, we live here and pay rent."
