A pipe bomb exploded in a garbage can along the route of a charity 5K in Seaside Park, New Jersey before the race started today, and at least one other explosive device that did not explode was found, according to Ocean City Police.
Cops say the bomb exploded in a garbage can at about 9:35 a.m. today. It was located along the route of the Seaside Semper Five Marine Corps Charity 5K, but no runners were in the area when the bomb went off because the start of the race had already been delayed. NBC reports that the delay was due to late sign-ins, but according to PIX11 it was because someone in the area found an unattended backpack.
"Two to three" other explosive devices that failed to explode were found wired together near the garbage can, according to ABC 7, but no other bombs were found. The bomb did no damage beyond blowing up the garbage can it was placed in, according to NJ.com, but a four block perimeter around the explosion was evacuated and police didn't let traffic into Seaside Park while they searched the area for more bombs. The race was called off as well. By 1 p.m., access to most of Seaside Park's roads was restored. No motive or suspect has been named yet. We will update when more information becomes available.
