A cold front passed through the city early this morning, heralding the arrival of a much drier air mass. The dew point temperature in Central Park dropped from the upper 70s yesterday evening down to the much more comfortable mid 60s this morning. Closer to the ocean, the dew point at JFK fell below 70 degrees for the first time in 180 hours. For fans of very obscure weather trivia, that's the longest the dew point has been above 70 at the airport since records began in 1948. Somewhat less obscure, Central Park has reached at least 90 degrees seventeen days this year, which is about average.
Despite northwesterly winds, we should still warm to the upper 80s this afternoon. In fact, afternoon highs in the mid to upper 80s seems to be the pattern for the next several days. The humidity is going to climb a bit tomorrow, and there may be a slight chance of afternoon showers, but it should be a mostly sunny day. More of the same is expected on Friday but if showers occur they are going to be few and far between.
As it looks now, the weekend will be mostly dry and warm. An upper level disturbance and an approaching cold front could start to trigger some precipitation late Sunday night on into Monday. Once that front passes Tuesday could be our first cooler than normal day in almost three weeks, with a high only in the low 80s.
