The heat dome is upon us and is likely to turn into a thunder dome later today. The heat dome, which is just a sexier name for a summertime high pressure system, is centered over Myrtle Beach this morning, which is perfect for pushing plenty of uncomfortably muggy weather our way. Today's high should reach the mid 90s. With dew points near 70 degrees it will feel closer to 100, so a heat advisory is in effect from noon until tomorrow evening.
Along with an extremely hot and humid air mass comes the chance for showers or thunderstorms. There is a slight chance of widely scattered showers this afternoon and a much better chance of more intense rain this evening as a shortwave in the jet stream passes way overhead and a cold front approaches on the ground. The best chance of severe weather looks to be north and east of the city proper, but we could still see torrential rains and gusty winds through the night.
The cold front will pass through the area early tomorrow morning. There is no cold air behind the front, but it will be noticeably drier on Saturday. Without that humidity look for tomorrow's high to again reach the mid-to-upper 90s. Relatively comfortable weather is expected on Sunday. The high will be in the lower 90s but the air will be dry, with dew points only in the upper 50s. Don't get your hopes up, heat and humidity will return for much of next week.
