The first heavy heat wave of summer is upon us, and New Yorkers are doing whatever it takes to endure it. For some, that means carrying around an extra sweat towel as they commute on the subway. Temperatures at the West 72nd Station climbed towards 90˚ yesterday afternoon, and the seventh-circle-of-hell pit known as West 4th Street topped out at 94˚.

Meanwhile, temperatures above above ground were much the same, and the midday crowd at both Bryant and Washington Square Parks was sweltering and conspicuously underdressed. With the "RealFeel™" edging above 100, the forecast shows nothing but more hot weather smothering us for the rest of the week. A heat advisory is in effect for NYC until 8 p.m. tonight, and there's an air quality alert from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday. That means "active children and adults, and people with lung disease, such as asthma, should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors." Oh, and just to keep things interesting, a flash flood warning from noon to 6 p.m.

There's no use fighting it: summer is here to stay.
