Just in time for today's (mostly) blazing sun, the NYC Parks and Recreation Department opened all 55 public pools. Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver made the ceremonial jump into Staten Island's Faber Pool, where he also announced, "For the first time ever, we're extending the outdoor pool season by one week so that New Yorkers have even more access to a cool pool when the temperatures are high."
The outdoor pools—here's a list—are open daily 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., seven days a week (that 3 p.m.-4 p.m. break is for pool cleaning). And, as Silver mentioned, the NYC's 36 intermediate- and Olympic-sized pools are open through Sunday, September 11; the other 19 pools are open through September 4.
The Parks Department also wants pool visitors remain "cautious and alert in and around the water" and offers these water safety tips:
- Only swim where lifeguards are present and follow their directions
- Learn to swim
- Never leave children unattended
- Obey all posted signs and flags
- Watch for dangerous waves and rip currents
- Stay alert and aware of your surroundings
- Wear a life jacket when boating
- Don’t take unnecessary risks
- Be safe in the sun
- Know before you go
Here are some other tips to enjoying the public pools (remember, no newspapers!).
