Several hundred drag queens and kings kicked off Pride Weekend yesterday evening with a wild and fabulous march across downtown from Tompkins Square Park to the country's newest National Monument, the Stonewall Inn.
The annual Drag March began around 7 p.m. in the park, and after about an hour of happy reunions, photo-ops galore, and last-minute wardrobe and makeup fixes, the queens and kings and their entourages walked across 10th Street. The NYPD provided an escort, stopping traffic at each avenue so that the two-block-long march could stay together, and most passersby were delighted by the spectacle.
The Drag March was co-organized by the New York City Church Ladies For Choice and the Radical Faeries. An impromptu percussion band provided accompaniment, and the chants ran to the cheeky, such as "We're here, we're queer, were coming for your children!" and "Ten percent is not enough: Recruit! Recruit! Recruit!"
