Don't be fooled by the Nutritious Sandwich on the menu at Win Son, a new Taiwanese-American soul food restaurant that just opened on Graham Avenue in East Williamsburg. Chef Trigg Brown's irreverently-named sandwich is actually a savory doughnut stuffed with ham, pickled pineapple and cilantro. Enjoy entering that into your calorie counter.
Win Son is the baby of Trigg and friend/business partner Josh Ku, a first generation Taiwanese-American who introduced Trigg to his heritage cuisine. The team did a pop-up collaboration dinner last month, where they introduced dishes like the Pan Griddled Pork Buns ($9) with scallions and chili vinaigrette and the Big Chicken Bun ($13), a fried chicken leg sandwich sauced with fermented tofu sauce and sliced herbs.
Now they've got their full menu in swing, with a beverage program designed by Brett Helms. Cocktails, which are meant to be paired with certain dishes, are unique creations, like one with gin, pickled ramps and dry vermouth (Mr. Mitchell's Gibson, $11) and another with peanut milk, El Dorado 8 Year, rum cream and toasted coconut (Breakfast of Champions, $12).
159 Graham Avenue, 347-457-6010. Sunday - Thursday 5:30 p.m. - 12 a.m., Friday and Saturday 5:30 p.m - 2 a.m. Kitchen closes at 11 p.m.
