It's the middle of May but that didn't stop a trace of snow from falling upstate and elsewhere yesterday. We escaped the snow downstate but this morning's low of 43 in Central Park was only one degree above the record set during the Rutherford B. Hayes administration. The cold air is still arriving on the back of a strong westerly breeze so don't look for it to warm much beyond 60 this afternoon.
The jet stream is flowing in a zonal pattern this week, pushing surface weather systems pretty rapidly from west to east. As a result the high pressure system giving us the fair weather today will move quickly offshore, setting us up for overcast skies and a chance of light showers from tomorrow afternoon through Wednesday morning.
A stationary front to our south would kick off those showers but it doesn't look like forecasters have a good handle on how close the front will get to the city. Showers or not, highs on both days will be in the mid 60s.
The forecasts come back into better agreement toward the end of the week. The jet stream will push a Midwestern high pressure system our way, allowing the sun to return and temperatures to rise up to the upper 60s to lower 70s for Thursday and Friday.
