A cab driver that witnessed a Bronx hit-and-run collision sprang into action Sunday, pursuing a driver for seven miles and helping NYPD officers set up a road block to apprehend him. According to the Post, the cabbie was nearby when a Kia Sorento struck a 21-year-old man as he attempted to cross the street at the corner of East 181st Street and Southern Boulevard just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

The Kia driver, who police identified as 40-year-old Mohamed Fofana, did not stop and sped away from the scene on Southern Boulevard. At that point, the cab driver began tailing Fofana past the Bronx Zoo and through the New York Botanical Gardens. Police sources told the Post that the cabbie dialed 911 to report the injured pedestrian, and told them he was following Fofana.

According to a police spokesperson, Fofana's victim was critically injured and was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital.

Although a police spokesperson could not confirm the cab driver's involvement in catching Fofana, NYPD sources told the Post that the good samaritan kept after Fofana until he reached Boston Post Road, where police stopped him at an impromptu roadblock. Police told the Daily News they found Fofana in a drunken state with watery eyes and shaky balance. A breath test revealed that he was intoxicated above the legal limit.

Fofana was charged with two counts of vehicular assault, driving without a license, leaving the scene of an accident, and DWI. The 21-year-old victim remains in critical condition.
