A 22-year-old woman was stabbed to death this morning inside a Brooklyn apartment building that was known for housing homeless families, according to police.
Police say the victim, Toni Cox, was visiting someone in a sixth floor apartment at 60 Clarkson Ave. in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens at around 5:30 a.m. when she was stabbed multiple times in her torso. She was taken to Kings County Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to the Post, cops think Cox, who lived in a second floor apartment in the building, was killed by the ex-boyfriend of the woman who resides in the apartment Cox was visiting.
The building was previously a rent-stabilized apartment complex, but landlord Barry Hers began moving homeless families in in 2001 as part of the city's cluster site program. The building was routinely cited for its severe leaks, mold, and vermin infestations, but Hers still collected millions of dollars from the city.
The city was supposed to move residents to more permanent housing over the summer but lagged, and the building officially ceased to be a shelter last October.
