The NYPD Officer who handed a Bronx driver a summons then blamed it on Mayor de Blasio has been suspended. According to the Daily News, the unidentified officer “faces charges of conduct unbecoming for an officer.”
“He didn’t use any profanity or anything, but if you are going to hand out a ticket just do it,” a “high-ranking police source” told the News. “Don’t give a ticket out and then blame it on someone else.”
Despite the officer’s claim that “Mayor de Blasio wants us to give out summonses,” the actual number of summonses for moving violations issued by the NYPD has not significantly changed since Bloomberg was in office. According to NYPD data, the NYPD actually handed out more summonses at this point in 2013 than they have in 2016.
Patrolmen's Benevolent Association head Pat Lynch has called the officer who fatally strangled Eric Garner "the model of what we want a police officer to be," and recently accused the on-duty postal worker who was detained after police nearly ran him over of "resisting arrest." How would he justify this officer's actions?
“Vision Zero limits officers’ discretion to issue warnings and puts further pressure on them to issue summonses, subjecting New Yorkers to expensive summonses that many cannot afford to pay," Lynch told the News. "(It's) an effort to save lives that boils down to police officers enforcing traffic laws." Police officers enforcing laws—de Blasio really is sending NYC straight to hell.
