A driver ran over a pedestrian in Astoria, Queens around 11 p.m. last night and left him for dead in the street. The 45-year-old victim was crossing 21st Street at 30th Road when he was fatally struck by the driver of a dark colored sedan headed southbound on 21st, according to police.

According to the NYPD's preliminary investigation, the victim was "just north" of 30th Road when he was killed. First responders found him lying in the roadway "with severe trauma to the body." He was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Officials have not yet disclosed his name pending proper family notification.

The driver remains at large. One police source tells PIX 11 that the driver "traveled a half a block with the victim on the hood of the car, slammed on the brakes, leaving the victim to fall on the roadway before fleeing the scene."

Local residents say drivers speed through their neighborhood with impunity. "Sometimes cars come flying down here,” one resident told CBS2 last night. “People have been trying to get a traffic light over here.” Another said, "There’s no speed limits and everything is just getting pretty out of hand over here."

The default NYC speed limit was reduced to 25 mph in 2014. In March, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said the NYPD has increased the number of speeding tickets issued by 28% over last year.
