Capping off a bloody weekend that saw two pedestrians and a cyclist killed by hit-and-run drivers, another driver struck and killed a pedestrian in the Bronx late Sunday night.
Police responded to the fatal collision at the intersection of McGraw Avenue and Unionport Road, where they found a 33-year-old man unresponsive in the roadway. The man was rushed to Jacobi Hospital but could not be saved.
The driver who reportedly struck the unidentified man remained at the scene. An initial NYPD investigation determined that the driver was traveling south on Unionport Road behind the wheel of a 2014 Ford Escape when he or she tried to pass two double-parked cars. Police say the driver "felt a large bump"; according to a preliminary investigation, investigators believe the man had been lying in the left lane of the road when he was struck.
The driver made a right onto McGraw Avenue and stopped, remaining at the scene. A police spokesperson confirmed that no arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing.
In a separate incident, police have identified the victim of a fatal hit-and-run collision in Queens. Besik Shengelia, a 48-year-old man, was struck near 107-41 111th Street as he was reportedly trying to retrieve personal items from the back seat of his parked car. The NYPD has also released video of a hit-and-run driver who killed a cyclist in Park Slope early Sunday morning, in hopes that the public will assist in identifying the motorist.
