Two NYPD officers were shot during a wild car chase-turned-shootout in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn early Saturday morning.

Authorities say the incident was sparked around 3:20 a.m. when two police officers from the department's housing bureau responded to reports of shots fired near the intersection of Quincy Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. The suspect, who has since been identified as 34-year-old Jamal Funes, allegedly pointed a revolver at them and fled in a vehicle.

The officers pursued him, and after a chase in which Funes allegedly shot at the officers from his vehicle, Funes went the wrong way on Lexington Avenue and slammed into a marked patrol car. During the subsequent standoff with at least eight officers, two plainclothes anticrime officers, William Reddin and Andrew Yurkin, were both shot.

Reddin was struck in the hip, and Yurkin was struck in his protective vest at point-blank range (the bullet didn't penetrate his vest, but he suffered blunt-force trauma). Both officers were taken to Kings County Hospital, where Reddin underwent surgery; they are both in stable condition.

Funes was shot "numerous" times according to NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton; he is still in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital. A .357 revolver was recovered at the scene.

"This morning's a reminder of the important and dangerous and crucial work that police officers do, and the way they put their lives on the line every single day,” Mayor de Blasio said during a press conference at the hospital this morning. He added that both officers were "alert and talkative, and it was so good to see them in such good shape despite everything they’d been through," adding that they are "very dedicated officers."
