An emotionally disturbed man tried to shove a woman in front of an approaching subway last night in Downtown Brooklyn.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the 27-year-old woman was waiting on the northbound 4 and 5 platform at the Borough Hall station around 8 p.m. when a man started yelling at her and telling her to leave the station. When she began to walk away, he followed and attempted to shove her onto the tracks, police said.

The woman told police that she grabbed a pillar to keep from falling onto the tracks just as a train arrived; at that point, the suspect fled. The victim then boarded the train and took it to 14th Street-Union Square, where she reported the incident to officers there.

Those officers broadcast her description of the suspect to police near the Borough Hall station, who identified David French, 46, at the corner of Court Street and Joralemon Street. He was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment.

Police said that French is homeless and has prior arrests that include slapping a subway rider in 1994. He has not yet been arraigned for last night's incident.
