There are 20% more Edison Bulbs in East Harlem now courtesy of Maxwell's Central Park, the uptown of expansion of Tribeca restaurant Maxwell's. The new restaurant, which opened last week, takes over a former Ottomanelli Bros location on 5th Avenue between 111th and 112th Streets, just a few blocks from Central Park.
It's an interesting addition to the culinary scene in that part of Harlem—central Harlem's food renaissance notwithstanding—and a sign that the speed of gentrification in that section of the neighborhood may be hastening. "We've been interested in Harlem for a while," said owner Alex Tortolani. "We saw an opportunity, kind of an underserved area of East Harlem where there aren't a lot of bars and restaurants."
Like its downtown companion, the uptown Maxwell's serves gourmet comfort food like Fish & Chips ($18), Mac & Cheese ($15) and a selection of burgers. The menu's slightly different to accommodate the kitchen size and Tortolani says they were mindful of keeping the prices "accessible" for the neighborhood versus prices in Tribeca. The priciest entree is a $20 Walnut Encrusted Salmon with wilted spinach and mashed potatoes, and the bar menu has several items under $10 for the drinking set.
The bar section of the restaurant is large and they'll be playing sports daily as events come up. Imbibers can get away with a $4 bottle of Tecate or spring for a $12 Chimay. Classic cocktails like Negronis, Dark & Stormys and Old-Fashioneds are below market rate at $11 with glasses of wine priced between $8 and $10.
