The most abnormal thing happened over the weekend: temperatures cooled down to almost normal for this time of year. Fun fact: Saturday was the coldest day in Central Park since March 29th, which also happens to be the last time the temperature was below freezing. It is looking almost certain now that this month will not have a single colder than normal day and will be the first December to never have a day below freezing.
A surface high pressure system over the Carolinas and the jet stream retreating way, way north will work to give the entire East coast a record warm Christmas week. Today we'll warm to at least the lower 50s, possibly the upper 50s if the sun comes out, and hit the lower 60s for the first full day of winter and again on Wednesday. Along with the warmth we'll have to contend with a few showers tomorrow and a day-long slog of rain on Wednesday. Then there's Thursday...
A warm front will move north through the area on Wednesday night, allowing a warm, humid air mass to reach all the way up into Maine. Christmas Eve is going to be warm and muggy, with a high in the upper 60s and possibly the lower 70s. That's thirty degrees above the normal high. A cold front with no cold air behind it will follow Santa that night, giving us a sunny Christmas Day with a high in the lower 60s. Expect temperatures in the mid 50s for next weekend.
