A 62-year-old woman was fatally struck by an MTA bus driver last night as she crossed the street in Sheepshead Bay.

Eleanora Shulkina had finished up her shift at her job at a Manhattan hotel, and was heading home after dropping by her son's place with some groceries. She was walking in the crosswalk across East 17th Street around 6 p.m. when the driver of a B36 bus made a left turn on Avenue Z, striking her.

She was taken to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition, and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

“They told us she was in the emergency room. We thought she was all right,” Shulkina's son told the Daily News. “I can’t believe this. ... She died under my window.”

The bus driver remained on the scene and has not been charged. An investigation is ongoing.

The incident occurred just as the NYPD announced its Holiday Pedestrian Safety Initiative, which targets drivers who are speeding or who fail to yield to pedestrians in areas near senior centers during hours with the highest concentration of foot traffic. The agency did not specify what those hours are.

On Sunday, police arrested an alleged hit-and-run driver for hitting and critically injuring a 21-year-old woman in Far Rockaway, and last week, 17-year-old Ovidio Jaramillo was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in the crosswalk at the intersection of Northern Boulevard and Junction Boulevard in Queens.

Bus drivers turning left have also proven especially deadly for pedestrians. In November, a man was seriously injured after being struck by an MTA bus driver while crossing the street in the Lower East Side. Earlier in the month, another MTA bus driver struck and killed a 69-year-old Queens woman in a Forest Hills crosswalk.

The spate of blows to Mayor de Blasio's Vision Zero initiative prompted Queens officials to hold a press conference, during which they lectured pedestrians on the dangers of "distracted walking."
