Rejoice! You still can't use your city-issued municipal ID to get into bars, but you CAN use it to gain free access to neat cultural attractions around the city for another year.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced today that in addition to the extension, ID-holders can also stride past the ticket window (so to speak) at seven additional institutions: The Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art, the New Museum, the Metropolitan Opera, the Museum of Chinese in America, BRIC Arts | Media and Pregones Theater. Discounts are also available for Citi Bike, the New York City Football Club, Roundabout Theatre Company and others. (Check out the full list here.)
“In just one year, the IDNYC program has grown to be the leading municipal identification program in the country, and an example to cities all across the world. I am proud to announce that even more New Yorkers will be able to join the ranks of IDNYC cardholders in 2016 absolutely free, so that every city resident has the confidence to interact with law enforcement, enter a government building, or pick up their kids from school," de Blasio said in a statement.
The IDNYC program was launched in 2014 with the goal of not only expanding New Yorkers' access to services across the city, but to serve as a valid ID when it comes to interacting with cops, entering city buildings, checking out library books and opening bank accounts.
Anyone over 14 is eligible to receive the card, and enrollment is free. Those interested in applying can do so here.
And as a bonus: The Department of Homeland Security is giving New Yorkers an extra year to use their IDs on domestic flights, so party on or what have you.
