Add another stop to your holiday spirit to-do list: "Luminaries," a new light installation in the Winter Garden at Brookfield Place hopes to become a New York winter tradition. Through January 10th, the cavernous ceiling in the atrium will remain covered with 650 LED lanterns pulsating with color as part of an interactive light show. Check out this video of the effects and be careful with the brown acid:

Each day the exhibit is open, there will be choreographed light shows every two hours, titled "Snowfall,” “Christmas Tree,” “Ribbons,” “Firecracker,” and “Northern Lights.” But even more intriguing are the interactive Wishing Stations scattered throughout the Winter Garden. Visitors can make a wish while putting their hands on the stations; once they release their hands, they will see a colorful interpretation of their wish splashed across the lanterns above. For each wish sent up to the ceiling, Arts Brookfield will donate $1 up to $25,000 to The Grammy Foundation's "Grammy in the Schools" program, which helps high schoolers get experience in the music industry. (A Brookfield spokesperson tells us "each wishing station can calculate how many wishes were made.")

The installation was designed by the LAB at Rockwell Group, whose previous projects include virtual kaleidoscopes at The Whitney and sound and light installations at The Four Seasons. This installation is free and is open 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily. For those planning on sending up wishes through the touch-sensitive stations, consider bringing Purell—'tis the (flu) season.
