Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced the expansion of wi-fi service to 21 more subway stations in the Bronx and 16 in Manhattan.

Transit Wireless, the company contracted to enable the city's 279 underground subway stations with internet access, has successfully built out networks in hubs like Lexington Av-53rd St., Lexington Av-59th St., 149th St-Grand Concourse, and 125th St. Click here to see the full list of stations.

“More and more, access to high speed internet is a necessity and many New Yorkers cannot afford to be blacked out while trying to get from point A to point B,” Governor Cuomo said. “By ensuring that subways stations throughout the city offer full Wi-Fi capabilities, we are not only improving rider experience, but also making public transportation a more viable option for those who work in and around our city.”

The fifth phase will bring wi-fi to an additional 37 stations by mid-2016, including the first stations in Brooklyn. The MTA and Transit Wireless are currently on track to outfit each station with wi-fi by 2017, a year ahead of schedule.

In the phase three rollout last year, straphangers were gifted with wi-fi in 40 more stations, which spanned 11 in Manhattan and 29 in Queens. The project has been in the works since 2010.
