The NYPD has arrested the MTA bus driver they believe is responsible for the fatal hit-and-run death of a 70-year-old woman in East New York this morning.
Paul Roper, 48, is charged with felony leaving the scene of a collision involving death, failure to yield to a pedestrian, and failure to exercise due care.
Video obtained by NBC shows the victim, 70-year-old Carol Bell, crossing Fulton Street at around 6:15 a.m. when the bus driver stops at Sackman Street then turns left, striking her.
According to NBC, the bus driver briefly stops after hitting Bell, then resumes. Bell, who was pronounced dead at the scene, lived in a women's shelter one block away from where she was killed.
A spokesman for the bus drivers' union, TWU Local 100, has not immediately responded to our request for comment.
[UPDATE] “This is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts and prayers go out to all family and friends,“ TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen said in an emailed statement. "We will closely follow the investigation, which is in a very early stage.”
