Update below
Police arrested two off-duty law enforcement officers, a cop and a jailer, on Saturday for allegedly driving drunk and crashing in separate incidents.
Police arrived at the first crash scene on the Upper East Side at FDR Drive and East 92nd Street at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday. There they found NYPD Officer Angelica Beltran had rammed into the back of a GMC Suburban. Beltran is 39 and a 15-year veteran and works as a Community Affairs officer in Manhattan, according to the Daily Newsgo. The SUV's driver and passenger were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, and officers cuffed Beltran and charged her with driving while intoxicated.
A Pix11 report indicates that Beltran has been suspended, but an NYPD spokeswoman said she did not have information on whether Beltran is still getting paid.
In the evening, at around 6:20 p.m., cops pulled over corrections Officer Jerrel Mitchell on Howard Avenue near the border of Crown Heights and Brownsville, after they say he hit two cars within four blocks. Mitchell allegedly sideswiped one vehicle at Eastern Parkway and Pacific Street, then rear-ended another on Eastern Parkway at Rockaway Avenue. Police reported no injuries in either crash. Mitchell has been charged with DWI and leaving the scene of an accident.
Correction Department reps did not immediately respond to requests for comment about Mitchell's employment status, and it was not immediately clear who Mitchell and Beltran's lawyers are.
Update 6:30 p.m.:
Department of Correction spokesman Jack Ryan sent the following statement regarding Officer Mitchell:
"While we do not comment on ongoing investigations, we take this arrest seriously. The vast majority of correction officers perform their duties with the highest level of integrity and Commissioner [Joseph] Ponte has zero tolerance for those who don't."
Mitchell has been suspended from his post.
