Police have arrested the suspected gunman who they say shot three people on the morning of October 6th in East Williamsburg, killing Michael Matusiak, a 53-year-old metal worker. Cops with the Brooklyn North Violent Felony Squad found Bryan Aponte, 20, in East New York on Tuesday, an NYPD spokesman said. Aponte allegedly opened fire on Matusiak and a coworker after Matusiak objected to Aponte and an accomplice breaking into parked cars around 7:50 that morning. The coworker, Derrick Robinson, was also struck, along with a 13-year-old girl walking to school.
Early this morning, the Police Department announced the arrest of another suspect, Ryan Cruzado, 18, on charges of hindering the prosecution. Cruzado turned himself in at the Williamsburg station house last Thursday, police said. Officers believe Cruzado helped Aponte change clothes following the shooting so that he could evade cops.
Aponte is charged with second degree murder, which carries as many as 25 years in prison, and weapons possession. Cruzado's hindering prosecution charges together could carry as many as 11 years imprisonment.
Aponte's purported car burglary accomplice has yet to be identified.
