Fear abounded after Katz's Deli sold its air rights that luxury condos were coming for the 126-year mecca of pastrami sandwiches and fake orgasms. But lo: The sandwich superstars are not only safely secured in their LES digs; they're opening an outpost in the forthcoming Dekalb Market Hall in Downtown Brooklyn.
“The main thing is that it’s hard to get down to the Lower East Side, and Brooklyn has been a strong part of our customer base,” owner Jake Dell told the Times. “We can make it a little easier for our customers who have been coming for generations.” Sure, why not!
DeKalb Market, to be located at 1 DeKalb Avenue, will span 60,000-square-feet of food stall space. Nearly half of the eventual 57 vendors have already been signed up, including an 18,000-square-foot Trader Joe's.
