New Yorkers have long embraced the many miserable stereotypes about living in the city—if anything, we generally relish our neuroses and anxieties. Some wise sages might say complaining is an evolutionary function! It's just like that old saying (which I just made up) goes: to complain about the [MTA/NYPD/real estate/the cost of iced coffee/our neighbors/ourselves] is to truly love it. And when we are in public, we are often at our surliest.
But once in a while, very occasionally perhaps, NYers openly experience the pin prick of happiness, the undiluted & uncomfortable flooding of joy. Sometimes it happens when they're dancing in the street; sometimes when their favorite sports team is doing well; sometimes it happens amongst a crowd; sometimes it's when they think they're all by themselves.
And sometimes it happens in the middle of traffic while listening to Maroon 5's "Sugar."
We should all be so lucky as to discover the song which inspires us to do aerial leg splits in the middle of traffic.
Update: It turns out that Happy Man is a living legend—reader Ryan spotted him in Williamsburg last Sunday blasting Robert Palmer's "Simply Irresistible."
