With Mayor de Blasio spending 9/11 playing a game of shade-toss with Mayor of 9/11 Town Rudy Giuliani, Cuomo was free to take a break from his rivalry with City Hall to go on a 9/11 memorial motorcycle ride with Billy Joel and Vice President Joe Biden.
The gang rode from Midtown Manhattan to Ground Zero yesterday, retracing the route taken by FDNY Rescue 1 on September 11th, 2001. They were followed by hundreds of police officers, firefighters and other people who wanted to pay their respects to those lost on 9/11. Rescue 1 lost nearly half its company when the Twin Towers came down.
This isn't the first time Joel's joined Cuomo on the ride, but the addition of Biden was significant this year‐both he and Cuomo have pledged to fight for the renewal of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which helps compensate and fund healthcare for 9/11 responders and first survivors who have suffered from illnesses stemming from rescue efforts.
Jon Stewart, who was one of the driving forces behind the passage of the bill in 2010, will also fight for its renewal, with plans to join survivors and rescuers in lobbying Congress next week. Last year, New York lawmakers—including Mayor de Blasio—urged Congress to extend the bill for 25 years.
