A 59-year-old woman suffered severe facial burns yesterday when a man threw an acid-like substance at her face in Sunnyside.

According to police, the unidentified woman was at 43rd Avenue and 33rd Street at around 5:35 p.m. yesterday when the assailant tossed the caustic liquid at her. She was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, then moved to the Columbia Med Center Burn Unit so she could be treated for serious chemical burns.

The victim is expected to survive. It's unclear why the man attacked her, or whether the two knew each other. No arrest has been made, and the incident is still under investigation.
