A teenage driver allegedly ran through a stop sign in Queens last night and was struck by another driver who crashed into the side of his car. The teenager's father was sitting in the passenger's seat, and was killed. The driver of the second vehicle was also a teen, and was allegedly driving with a learner's permit.
According to the NYPD, the 19-year-old was driving a Honda sedan southbound on 231st Street in Cambria Heights, and ran through the stop sign at the corner of 119th Avenue. A 17-year-old, driving a Nissan sedan east on 119th Avenue, rammed into the passenger side of his vehicle.
NBC reports that the 19-year-old was driving with both of his parents, and that his father was in the passenger seat. The NYPD confirms that a 47-year-old woman was also in the vehicle, and was transported to North Shore Manhasset Hospital in stable condition. The boy's father, 50-year-old Jackson Garth, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Franklin General Hospital. His son was taken to Jamaica hospital in stable condition.
1010 WINS reports that the 17-year-old had taken out his father's car for a "joy ride" and had been seen speeding around the neighborhood. He was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital, also in stable condition.
"I was inside my house and I hear a big, everlasting bang," one neighbor told NBC.
"They had to remove the top of the car to remove the bodies, so that's why it looks so bad over there," another added.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
