[UPDATE BELOW] A pedestrian was struck and killed by the driver of a truck coming off the Manhattan Bridge this afternoon.

Police at the scene said the victim, a man, was crossing Canal Street where traffic comes off the Manhattan Bridge when he was hit by the big rig. Cops confirmed that the man was dead, and that the truck driver "didn't see him." There is no crosswalk at the site of the collision.

The intersection near the bridge is notoriously deadly. Last year, Councilwoman Margaret Chin sponsored legislation requiring a DOT study on how major truck routes impact safety. The legislation passed and the mayor signed it last month.

We'll update this story as information is released.

Reporting by James Constant

Update, 4:35 p.m.: According to police, the 78-year-old victim was struck by the driver of the dump truck while crossing Canal Street. He was taken to Downtown Beekman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The 24-year-old driver has been taken into custody, and the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is looking into the matter.

Update, 4:50 p.m.: Councilwoman Margaret Chin has sent along the following statement:

When I stood at this week’s Vision Zero vigil reading the names of those killed in traffic crashes so far this month, I had a bad feeling that there might be another name to add to the list. My heart goes out to the family of the victim of today’s crash, which is an unfortunate reminder that our city still has a long way to go to achieve our shared vision of zero pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities on our roadways. My office continues to work with the Dept. of Transportation to install traffic calming measures to slow down trucks exiting the Manhattan Bridge and to protect pedestrians and bicyclists at this deadly crossroads.
