Heartland Brewery may not be the hippest of NYC's craft beer scene but it's one of the early adopters, having opened its (now defunct) Union Square brewpub in 1995. There are only three of the brewpubs left in NYC now, but the company just debuted a new outlet for showcasing their beer with a taproom operating out of their Brooklyn brewery.
The new Heartland Taproom on Waverly Avenue—they're calling it Fort Greene but we're calling it Clinton Hill—will be a retail outlet of the 13-year-old brewery, now the city's second largest brewery behind those guys in Williamsburg. There, brewmaster Kelly Taylor whips up 40,000 kegs of 25 styles of beer for the brewpubs, in addition to brewing his own KelSo Beer on site as well. Offerings from both companies will be available at the Taproom, which will rotate between six varieties depending on the season.
To start, an IPA, Imperial Saison, White IPA and Juniper Black IPA, all with ABVs over 6%, plus a Smorg Pilsner (4.5% ABV) and Nut Brown Lager (5.75% ABV). Pints of the fizzy stuff'll set you back either $5 or $6 with growler fills going between $10 and $12. They'll have some salty snacky-type things (pork rinds, pretzels, etc.) for noshing, but given its proximity to rad pizza spot Emily, we recommend swinging by for a pre- or post-brew session burger meal.
