A driver died following a four-car crash in the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan early this morning, police said.
According to cops, 54-year-old William Hay tried to drive his Volkswagen sedan between a parked car and another driver stopped at a red light on Marble Hill Avenue at W. 228th Street around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The resulting crash sent the two stopped cars hurtling across the intersection into another driver, stopped at the light facing the opposite direction on Marble Hill Avenue, according to the NYPD. The Daily News spoke to a survivor, who said Hay was speeding.
"The Volkswagen must have been going at least 80 miles per hour," said Michael Duran, translating for a man named Rene. "I'm still trying to understand what [the driver] was thinking."
Hay lived less than a mile away in Spuyten Duyvil, according to police. Paramedics drove him to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Seven others were treated for minor injuries, according to the station.
Early on Saturday morning, a hit-and-run motorist struck 21-year-old Betty Jean Dibiasio as she crossed Ditmars Boulevard at 19th Street in Astoria. Responding cops found Dibiasio lying in the road with head trauma just before 12:30 a.m. Paramedics drover her to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police have not released a description of the car involved, but the investigation is ongoing, and a police spokesman said Dibiasio was crossing in the crosswalk at the time she was struck. The intersection is a four-way stop, three blocks from Dibiasio's 21st Avenue home.
The intersection has been the scene of five other crashes since the beginning of last year, none that injured people. The Marble Hill intersection was the site of 16 crashes in the same period, two of which injured motorists.
