A 27-year-old Greenpoint man died from injuries sustained after being struck by a motorist in Williamsburg earlier this month. The NYPD announced today that Martin Celmer was crossing Metropolitan Avenue shortly before 2:30 p.m. on June 11th when the driver of a 2014 black Toyota Camry crashed into him. Officials say Celmer was pronounced dead five days later at Bellevue Hospital, but the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad [CIS] did not release details about the fatal collision until today.

According to investigators, Celmer was crossing Metropolitan midblock, from south to north, just west of Driggs Avenue. At the same time, the unnamed 46-year-old driver of the Toyota was headed east on Metropolitan and approaching Driggs "with a steady green light." Police say that as Celmer "reached the double yellow line, he reversed direction and ran into" the Toyota.

The driver remained at the scene, and there have been no arrests, but the NYPD announced this morning that "investigation is ongoing." An NYPD spokesperson could not say why CIS released the investigation details today, nearly ten days after Celmer's death.
