Running a restaurant in this city is near impossible—even if you're Danny Meyer—with unforeseen rent hikes, natural disasters and other perilous events waiting around every corner. Today, two city favorites announced their sudden closures, proving that even if you're beloved and wildly popular, you're not safe.
Chef David Santos has been reimagining traditional tasting menus since he opened his well received West Village eatery Louro two-and-a-half years ago. Today, the chef announced that following service tonight, the restaurant will close due to a jaw-dropping 70% increase in the rent on his West 10th Street space. Unable to renew at that price, Santos will be searching for a new space, but in the meantime will offer 50% off all the liquor this evening and will serve meals until the fridge empties.
On the Upper West Side, Eater brings word that Chef Tom Valenti's Ouest will serve its last meal on June 13th. There's no word yet on why the 14-year-old restaurant will close, but it seems to have happened suddenly—at least for part of the team. "The staff just found out yesterday," the office administrator told Eater. "We are all sad. Some people have been working here for almost 15 years."
