Greenpoint's forthcoming floating hang spot and water-based activities launch point Brooklyn Barge Bar has won a huge victory with the State Liquor Authority, who granted the fledgling venue with a full liquor license yesterday. Co-owner Will Drawbridge shared the exciting news with us via email last night, saying the team was "very excited and extremely grateful for the result." The bar had recently faced opposition from the local Community Board—who did not offer their recommendation that the spot receive a license—but as has been the case in recent years, the SLA went their own way.
That doesn't mean they don't have the support from much of the community. "We'd like to take full credit for this," Drawbridge said. "But it was really the amazing letters of support from our partners and the community that made this happen." Perhaps some of that comes with the team's promise to not just operate a bar-restaurant, but also offer lots of programming in the form of fishing, sailing, kayaking and other community-building pursuits. "This decision has ensured that we will be able to do all the free programming we've been planning," Drawbridge confirmed.
Drawbridge says that they'll offer a full bar but keep the options simple. "We are going to be carrying as many local beers and spirits as we can," he told us, along with their casual restaurant menu of stuff like salads, burgers, grilled chicken and fries. There's also no set opening date yet, but the team is aiming for mid-June.
