The MTA has released a shocking video showing what appears to be definitive proof that the 7 train extension will open at last, possibly even this year. After postponing the expected opening date from the end of 2013 to some time this year, the MTA is finally entering final preparations for the new westward stretch of 7 track. To the videotape:
As you can see in this video, tower operators, train dispatchers, and train operators are now being trained for service to the new 34th Street-Hudson Yards station at 11th Avenue. "We are in the final 50-yard sprint of this project," MTA Capital Construction Company President Michael Horodniceanu said in a statement. “We expect to announce an opening date in the next several weeks."
Construction on the $2.4 billion extension began back in 2007, and the opening has been delayed multiple times in recent years, most recently because a custom elevator designed for the new station failed a factory test. The extension has appeared to be close to opening for over a year and a half now—in 2013 then-Mayor Bloomberg took the first official ride on the extension. Now it looks like we'll see it open for business by the end of the year, unless the electric eels get in the way.
