A dirt bike driver crashed into a car in East New York on Friday, then ran off as his 14-year-old passenger lay on the ground with severe head wounds, police said.
The biker was driving fast down New Jersey Avenue around 4:30 pm when he ran into a Honda driver making a U-turn near Linden Boulevard, according to witnesses. He and his female passenger were thrown from the Kawasaki bike, the NYPD recounted. The other driver remained at the scene and paramedics transported the teen to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition.
Investigators canvassed the area and found surveillance video at a nearby Burger King that they say shows the biker running from the scene.
The Daily News sent a reporter to the hospital to speak to family members of the injured girl. “We need to find this boy so he can tell us why she was on the bike with no helmet and we can lock him up,” one unnamed relative said.
Dirt bikes and four-wheelers are generally not street legal, but cops are not supposed to chase them because of the risk of injury to the riders and bystanders.
An East Harlem man died while doing a wheelie on a dirt bike last year.
