Bart Simpson himself, actress Nancy Cartwright, unveiled a perfectly cromulent statue of Bartman in Midtown yesterday. And the voice behind El Barto is also the hands behind El Barto's sculpture! But is it priceless like a mother's love, or the good kind of priceless?
Cartwright, who has no formal art training beyond a one-hour sculpting class she took for her birthday three years ago, told the Post that she was inspired after seeing a Homer statue on the Fox lot in LA. "I had seen other people work with clay, and there was something inside me...I had this innate knowing that I could sculpt,” she said about the statue, which is permanently installed across the street from the News Corp building. "It’s a different kind of artistic gratification than I get from creating voices."
It took her 20 hours to mold the bust out of oil-based clay; she ended up adding the cape on her son's suggestion: "That kind of made it; it really established who Bart really is with the cape." Her mold was cast twice in bronze, so there'll also be a Bart bust at the University of Southern California.
"I didn't want to go all Picasso," she added to AP. There is only one thing left to do at a moment like this: strut.
