Hulu has announced that it will stream Seinfeld in a deal reportedly worth anywhere from $126 million to $180 million. Variety reports, "The deal is said to be valued at just under $1 million an episode, which translates to a nearly $180 million windfall to be split by distributor Sony TV, Time Warner’s Castle Rock and 'Seinfeld' profit participants, including star/co-creator Jerry Seinfeld and co-creator Larry David."
As Bania would say, "That's gold, Jerry! Gold!"
But the Wall Street Journal reports that it's a little lower:
Terms of the sale weren’t disclosed but a person with knowledge of the agreement said the per-episode value of the show would be approximately $700,000. Other bidders for the streaming rights to the hit 1990s NBC sitcom included Amazon.com Inc. and Yahoo.
Netflix also initially expressed interest but later dropped its pursuit of the “show about nothing” and instead struck a deal for streaming rights to “Friends” at a price tag in the neighborhood of $500,000 an episode.
FWIW, there are 180 episodes of Seinfeld, and 236 of Friends.
Netflix dropped out of the Seinfeld streaming derby last month. The downside to Hulu taking Seinfeld is that it'll be filled with commercials—but on a computer. Almost like bizarro Seinfeld:
Seinfeld will remain in syndication on TBS, for those of you clinging to your cords. The Hulu deal will be announced today at Hulu's upfronts.
