In a rare move, the Manhattan District Attorney has charged a 24-year-old driver with manslaughter for fatally striking a 57-year-old man while speeding on the Lower East Side last year.

According to a release from DA Cyrus Vance, Jr., 24-year-old Danny Lin was indicted today on one count of Manslaughter in the Second Degree, stemming from the November 24th incident. Lin struck 57-year-old Robert Perry, who was crossing the Bowery near Delancey Street at around 7 p.m.. Lin was allegedly driving 55 miles-per-hour on the Bowery in a 25 m.p.h. zone, and cops say he attempted to flee the scene, ultimately crashing into a fire hydrant on Stanton Street.

Lin initially faced charges of criminally negligent homicide, a class E felony that is the lowest felony charge available. The new manslaughter charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison, along with high fines.

"This defendant is charged with speeding down the Bowery at more than twice the new speed limit, allegedly striking and killing a 57-year-old man," Vance said in a statement today. "Miraculously, no one else was hurt when the car he was driving crashed into a hydrant on a sidewalk filled with other pedestrians. City streets are no place for this kind of reckless driving and dangerous speed.”

Victim Perry was a frequent resident at the Bowery Mission, where organizers and other visitors remembered him fondly. "Everyone [at the Mission] knows him. This has been his home," witness Indio Bryan told DNAinfo soon after Perry was killed. "He eats here, sleeps here. He was a good guy, harmless. He liked jazz a lot."
